Mexican Fine Dining

Before we cover how great the food is, the first thing that you should know about Pico’s Mex Mex on Upper Kirby is that this isn’t the cheap, dirty, side street Mexican food that many people (myself included) just can’t get enough of. Instead, this restaurant offers Mexican food that’s more high class, includes traditional and modern elements, and most entrée items are over $15, while many are over $25.

Why it’s a Favorite

Regardless of the prices at Pico’s, it’s still a favorite amongst many local Houstonians. While you may be able to find cheaper Mexican food somewhere else, nothing compares to the explosion of flavors you’ll find at Pico’s Mex Mex. The pato en dos moles consists of duck breast in pipian, duck hindquarters in mole, and is finished with herb wild rice and pine nuts. Definitely worth the $28 it’ll cost you. If you’re looking for something more traditionally Mexican, or more traditionally Tex-Mex, rather, make sure to start with the nachos, or even order it as your entrée. The nachos are loaded with beans, cheese, jalapenos, beef or chicken, and guacamole, and are only $12. Finally, if you’re like me and your most favorite thing ever is enchiladas, go for the enchiladas de mole poblano ($14) or the enchiladas de espinacas ($16). Both are amazing, come served with rice and beans, and are as filling and comforting as enchiladas should be. The fajitas are also one of the best things on this menu.

Must-Order Margaritas

Tequila is both the most traditional and the most popular alcohol in Mexico by far, and as such, not ordering a margarita to accompany your meal would be regrettable. Home of the world-famous PicoRita, you can order this beverage made from agave silver tequila and served frozen or on the rocks in 12 oz., 27 oz., or 48 oz. sizes. (Perhaps you’d better share this drink…). You can also get margaritas that are made with many different flavors, such as the MexiCosmo, made with pomegranate juice, or the Coctel de San Miguel, made with hibiscus liqueur and Jamaica water. The margaritas are really good, and as the restaurant quips, they did not create the margarita, but they did “perfect it.”

Casual Atmosphere

Despite the fact that this restaurant can definitely be labeled as a fine dining experience due to the cost and quality of the food, there’s no reason to feel like you need to get too dressed up or fancy here. The atmosphere is casual and laid back, and the patio is the perfect place to have a couple margaritas with friends while splitting a few yummy appetizers. The portions are big, unlike a lot of restaurants with similar prices, and the staff is friendly and informal, while still remaining profession. Really, the only downside to this place is the price, but other than that, it’s definitely worth going to if you don’t minding spending the extra bucks.
