Delis are usually great for sampling a lot of flavors from different parts of the world in a very filling and satisfying way, and the tradition is no different at Fricano’s Deli and Catering in Austin. The deli, which offers all of the classic favorites that you’d find in New York, was opened in 2006, and has quickly become a favorite Austin go-to. For amazing soups, sandwiches, salads, and cookies, check out Fricano’s next time you’re near the University of Texas.

Our Favorite Sandwiches

All sandwich shops have a few standout sandwiches that far out shine the others on the menu. While nearly everything at Fricano’s is amazing, the real gems at this deli are the Cajun turkey on sourdough, the spicy Reuben, the ultimate roast beef, and the sandwich known as the Italian club. If you’re looking for a vegetarian friendly sandwich, the Madison sandwich with mozzarella, tomato, basil, pesto and avocado is an amazing choice. J.J.’s veggie sandwich is a house favorite, and has avocado, cheddar, provolone, spinach, tomato, purple onion, cucumber, and sprouts. Add roasted red pepper hummus or jalapeno spread for an extra 50 cents to really jazz it up.

For the Health Nut

If you’re trying to be healthy or simply love getting your greens, you’ll love the salads here. The chef salad is an awesome combination of lettuce with all of the good fixings, including ham, turkey, salami, provolone, cheddar, tomatoes, onions, olives, sprouts, cucumbers, and your choice of dressing. If you were hoping for something a little greener, try the big spinach salad. This salad is as healthy as can be with big spinach leaves, navel oranges, almonds, feta cheese, olives, and black onions. If you’re feeling hungry, make it a combo meal by order a half sandwich plus salad. Or, opt for the soup of the day instead.

Cute and Quirky

The interior of this place is so cute that you may opt to eat your sandwich in rather than taking it to go. With red bar stools that line the counter like a 50s-style diner, red walls lined with plenty of store memorabilia, and a crowd of locals that are friendly and fun, you’ll love the ambiance of this deli.

What You’ll Pay

Prices aren’t as cheap as Subway here, but the quality’s a lot higher. Most of the sandwiches are priced around $8.25, which is a bit pricy for a sandwich. But, considering how good the sandwiches are, and that there’s a sandwich happy hour every weekday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, it’s worth it! Also, make sure you try one of Fricano’s black and white cookies before you go. While it’ll set you back $2.50 per cookie, the chocolate-dipped goodness of these sweet treats won’t make you regret it!
