School House Pub is one of the coolest places in Austin for locals to gather on the weekend to drink great craft beer, sip on a smooth cocktail, or check out some of the typical bar eats.

Specials Every Day

One of the things that makes this pub great is the fact that there are different happy hour specials every day. Happy hour is from 3 PM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday, and offers things like $4 ciders on Wednesdays, $5 off all wine bottles on Thursdays, and $3 beer and booze on Fridays. For a fun night any night, head to School House Pub with a group for great and cheap drinks.

Super Beer Selection

This is a pub after all, so it makes sense that they’d have an awesome beer selection. If you’re not familiar with beer specifics but have a general idea of what you like, explain your craving to the bar tender and they’ll get you set up with a great choice. If beer’s not your thing at all, there are also some amazing cocktails and wines to choose from, all at fairly reasonable prices.

Small but Tasty

The food menu here isn’t gigantic by any means—School House Pub is really all about the beverages—but we wouldn’t rule out going here for dinner regardless. In fact, some of the dishes are so good that we’d actually go out of our way for dinner here, drinks or not. The duck pie with chilled duck confit, sausage, thyme, rosemary, and sage in a piecrust is a big favorite here. If you’re trying to get your greens, go for the Hippie salad, which has local farm greens, dried cherries, sunflower seeds, pepitas, cucumbers, and sprouts. However, if you want something really filling and delicious, you’ve got to go for the School House Pub Burger, which has aged cheddar, greens, jalapeno-onion marmalade, and a challah bun. You can also add a fried egg or bacon to make it even better. The chilled crab club with lump crab meat and horseradish aioli is also quite popular.

It’s a School House

Another cool thing about this place is that the bar is actually designed in what looks like an old school house. Painted yellow with brown trim, the schoolhouse looks as though it belongs in Little House in the Prairie rather than Austin. With a very quaint and homey feel, this bar is great for relaxing. Plus, there’s a really awesome patio to kick it on on nights when the weather is nice.

Not a Late Night Place

Despite being a pub, this establishment closes at midnight, unlike some of its other late-night counterparts in Austin which serve food and drinks 24/7 or until 3 AM. Nonetheless, it’s a great place to grab a drink earlier in the evening, and to have dinner or a late lunch.
