You’ve probably heard of Tex-Mex, or the combination of Texan and Mexican cuisines, but have you ever heard of Asian fusion food that focuses on both Asian and Texan flavors? That’s right, for Asian food that has made an effort to got Tex-as-ian for you, you’ve got to try Fat Bao today.

What’s Bao?

Bao is short for Baozi, and is a traditional Chinese dish. Most commonly, bao is a bun of dough that’s been steamed and then filled with some sort of meat or vegetable(s). Usually, boa is also served with soy sauce or vinegar, and is very common food item in China.

Crazy Creative

The bao creations are so creative at Fat Bao that you’ll hardly be able to wait until your food is placed in front of you before digging in. A favorite amongst Houstonians is the Memphis bao, which has braised pork belly, Asian slaw, and green onions. Other great savory bao options include the Crab Daddy, which has soft shell crab and spicy mayo, and the Curry bao with beef brisket, cilantro, and pickled red onions.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

If you want to try an interesting dessert or sweet snack, order one of the sweet baos at Fat Bao. The PB&J bao is super delicious, slightly fried, ultra nostalgia inducing, and great for kids. The Smores bao is also amazing, as is the Fried Ice Cream bao.

Order Some Sides

Because a bao isn’t very big or expensive, you probably want to order two of them, or a side at the very least. The fried cauliflower here is amazing, and is a major hit amongst all who get it. The avocado chips are also to die for, and the FAT onion rings served with kimcheenaise dipping sauce are amazing for those who feel like going all out.

For the Health Conscious

If there’s no way you’re eating a fried peanut butter and jelly bao or an order of fries topped with pork belly (yea, they have that here), but have been dragged here by a friend, there are a couple salad options. The ginger miso salad has cucumber, red onions, and ginger miso dressing over a mix of greens and is pretty good.

Special Deals

While everything on this menu is already $5 or less, you can order a 2 Fat Bao or 3 Fat Bao special if you’re hungry. Each comes with either 2 or 3 baos, choice of fries, chips, or salad, and any fountain drink. The prices are $9.25 and $12.25 respectively. Not bad.

Take a Load Off

Fat Bao, in addition to serving perfectly portioned food, also serves beer and wine. It also has Wi-Fi, making it the perfect place to hang out on a late Saturday afternoon while catching up on some work or emails. There’s no outdoor seating, which is kind of a bummer, but hey, there had to be something wrong about this restaurant, right?
